WOW! We are so proud of Mrs. Armstrong and a select group of students in her gifted program. They did a great job representing Ellis at the JUNA (Junior United Nations Assembly of Alabama) at Birmingham Southern College January 26th-27th. Brittany H., Sierra G., Bre'Anna P., Genesis T., and Chancelyn W., served as delegates from France. They presented a resolution to establish a Sports Education Program for Refugee Children (SEPRC) which would provide unaccompanied children of refugee camps an alternative to becoming child soldiers.

Lily C., Nicole C., Caitlin K., and Meagan W., served as delegates from the United Kingdom. Their resolution to reduce child mortality in Nigeria by using a program called Mobile Midwife was passed at the committee meeting. This group also received Honorable Mention in Outstanding Resolution. (Thanks, Ms. Connor for your help with costumes!)

We are proud to announce that Mrs. Cunningham, school custodian, was nominated for "Citizen of the Year" for the city of Talladega. Mrs. Cunningham tirelessly works through programs in her church and other volunteer work for cancer awareness. As a cancer survivor, she has donated her time for the past six years to Relay for Life. We are thrilled with this nomination and admire her selfless contributions.

Two carts with 25 iPads each enable them to complete assignments wirelessly in "My Big Campus" and "Edmodo." Needless to say, the iPads were greeted with much enthusiasm by the students!

I was born in Talladega and attended school at Graham Elementary, Zora Ellis, and graduated from Talladega High School in 1982. I graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1988. I have taught in the Talladega City School System for 24 years.
I am married to Carrie Griffin Creel. We have one dog named “Odin.” We enjoy the outdoors. We camp, kayak creeks and rivers, and ride ATVs. We also enjoy grilling out and Alabama football.
The most spectacular experience that I have had is skiing in the Rocky Mountains and riding a snowmobile 128 miles (1 day) through Yellowstone.
I have enjoyed my teaching career in Talladega. The students and co-workers have been special. When my teaching career is over, I hope to be an electrical contractor and continue to do all the fun things I enjoy.

Semester Finals

Students with a "C" or better average are exempt from semester tests. Attendance will not be held against exempt students starting December 16th.

For students who are not exempt, semester final exams will be:

Monday, December 19th-- 2nd, 4th, and 6th period tests
Tuesday, December 20th-- 1st, 3rd, and 5th period tests
Wednesday, December 21st--Make-ups during 1st and 2nd period (for any final tests missed)

Students may be checked out by parents when finals are completed. Arrangements should be made at home ahead of time, since students will not be allowed to call to be checked out.

My name is Dottye Armstrong. I graduated from Talladega High School, and worked to be able to attend college. I was given the opportunity to attend UAB and the rest is history. I am married to Jim Armstrong, of Talladega. Our family consists of 4 beautiful children: Marlye, age 21; Alex, age 10; Olivia, age 7; and Lola, age 5. Teaching was always a dream of mine, and as a child, I played school for hours. My students were always very quiet, disciplined and flat. I still love teaching and my students are no longer flat, but diverse, gregarious, creative, and intelligent. When I’m not being called Mrs. Armstrong, I am with my family. When time allows, I read all types of books, but my favorite author is James Patterson, and my favorite series is, without a doubt, Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Christmas Spectacular

Dancing gingerbread men, guest soloists, music from the exciting instruments of first year students, as well, as the more experienced sounds of the ZEJH 8th graders and the Talladega High School Band will fill the air on Thursday, December 8, 2011, as the Zora Ellis and Talladega High School bands present their Annual Christmas Spectacular. The event will take place in Harwell Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Bring your pocket books and come early to enjoy the holiday atmosphere as the Talladega High School Band Boosters host their Annual Silent Auction. Various items will be available. For example: tickets to sporting events, local performances at the Ritz, Christmas items, restaurant certificates, etc. Winning bids will be announced before the conclusion of the concert.

We invite you to come support the Zora Ellis and Talladega High School bands and get in the holiday spirit, as well as finish up some Christmas shopping or holiday treats.

With hopes of lifting the spirits of individuals in our community, students at Ellis decided to send Thanksgiving and get well wishes to patients at Citizens Hospital in Talladega. Over 300 cards were sent to to be distributed to patients who are currently admitted or may be hospitalized during the Thanksgiving holidays.Students decorated the outside of their card and wrote words of encouragement on the inside. We commend this thoughtful gesture and wish all patients at Citizens BMC a speedy recovery!

After submitting her proposal, Ms. Webb was selected to serve as a presenter at the ASTA (Alabama Science Teacher Association) Conference at the McWane Center. Her topic was, "Making Your First Year as Easy as 1,2,3." Her presentation included: classroom management, time savers, and quick labs. Ms. Webb does a great job in the classroom, and we are thankful she was willing and CHOSEN to share her expertise with fellow educators across the state.

The Story Behind the Symbol

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena grew up in a dirt-floored house with hopes and dreams of making a difference. Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, police and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him in a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to death.
Within weeks of his death in March of 1985, Camarena's Congressman, Duncan Hunter, and high school friend Henry Lozano, launched Camarena Clubs in Imperial Valley, California, Camarena's home. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifices made by Camarena and others on behalf of all Americans. These coalitions began to wear red badges of satin, red ribbons, as a symbol Camarena's memory. The Red Ribbon Week campaign emerged from the efforts of these clubs and coalitions.

Today, Red Ribbon Week is nationally recognized and celebrated, helping to preserve Special Agent Camarena's memory and further the cause for which he gave his life. The Red Ribbon Campaign also became a symbol of support for the DEA's efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. By wearing a red ribbon during the last week in October, Americans demonstrate their ardent opposition to drugs. They pay homage not only to Special Agent Camarena, but to all men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of our nation's struggle against drug trafficking and abuse.

Mr. Ward's students recently completed a two-week project whereby they were to create a newsletter about internet safety. The newsletters were judged, and Thelma D.'s newsletter was selected to be used in conjunction with Ms. Smith's Terrific Tuesday session scheduled for October 18th. Thelma is picture below with an excerpt from her newsletter.

"Internet safety is a very important thing. NEVER EVER put your phone number online. Don't tell anyone if you are a boy or a girl. Don't tell people how old you are."

These are great points to remember when using the internet. Congratulations, Thelma!

Homecoming Dance

Tickets are on sale for our Homecoming Dance which will be October 20th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Pre-ordered tickets are $6.00 and tickets sold at the door the night of the dance are $7.00. Parents are required to pick up students from the Ellis gym. Students will not be allowed to leave the gym upon entering. Parents are welcome to stay for the dance and observe from the stands. Student dress is casual and must be appropriate.

22 Ellis students, who were former students at R.L. Young School, were recognized recently at an Awards Ceremony for their success and hard work on last year's ARMT. These students received either a bronze, silver, or gold medal. We are proud of these students and appreciate Mrs. Pattie Thomas, principal at Young, and her Awards Committee for remembering our students and rewarding them for their past accomplishments. New Baby Foy

Below is the cake the faculty and staff had planned to enjoy this afternoon during a Diaper Shower for Mrs. Foy. However, her baby had other plans. Born last night, Baby Girl Foy weighed 6 lbs. 1 oz. and was 19 inches long. This makes baby #6 for Mrs. Foy and her husband. Congratulations, to the Foy family!

Talk about excited! Mr. Miller is thrilled with a new site he, Mr. Ward,and Mrs. Carroll are using with their students. Students are able to create PowerPoints and other types of work and keep it in their "backpack." Teachers are able to approve, view, and grade projects. All this and NO "real" papers are involved! The best part is that students, teachers, and parents can access this from home. What a great way to take advantage of the benefits of technology in a 21st Century class. Cheer Mania Mini-Camp!

Ellis cheerleaders are hosting a Mini-Cheer Camp on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9 a.m til 1:00 p.m. The camp is for girls aged 4 to 6th grade. The camp will be at the school's gymnasium. The cost is $25.00 for early registration and $35.00 for late/on-site registration. The participants will receive instruction on cheers, chants, motions, dance and jumps. They will receive a t-shirt and cheer at Ellis' homecoming game on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

Special Olympics

Ms. Morris, Ms. Truss, and their students all enjoyed the Special Olympics hosted on the ASD campus this week. Students competitively participated in running, jumping, and throwing activities. Brittany H. and Connor G. were also present to lend a helping hand. We are so proud of how these students represented Ellis with their positive attitudes. Congratulations!
